SCHOOL CREST
The present crest of St . Joseph ' s Institution was introduced way back in 1950 . One of the underlying reasons for the change was that the symbols on the old crest were too difficult to identify . Futhermore , the design was inartistic .
In the old crest , the shield had 4 quarters on which were symbols of Religion , learning , athletics and the Lion of Singapore . The shield was enclosed in a garter summounted by a crest coronet . All this was enclosed in a type of scroll through which wreathed the fleur de lys and the shamrock in acknowledgement of the French and Irish influences permeating through the history of the school . The whole crest was surmounted by the Star - the symbol of the Christian Brothers and bore the motto " Ora et Labora ",
Mr . R . Walker , an Art Supervisor of the Education Department , after much thought and research , introduced the present crest .
In the present crest , the green field of the crest is divided into four parts by a white cross ( symbol of religion ). In the centre of the cross lies the Star ( symbol of the Brothers ). In the top left hand corner are 3 circles , symbolishing games and the sporting spirit of all Josephians . In the top right hand corner is the lamp of knowledge standing on a book ( symbol of learning ). The Lion at the bottom left hand corner indicates the Lion City of Singapore . The monogram at the bottom right hand corner of the crest contains the initials ofthe school ( SJI ).
The Crown on top of the badge is to remind us that St . Joseph ' s Institution was founded in the days when Singapore was still a Colony . It also symbolises victory - the victory of faith over the forces of evil . The inscription on the scroll below the badge , " Ora et Labora " is the school motto , " Pray and Work ".
