GREATER SACRAMENTO
WELCOME
While this last year has certainly been full of challenges , I continue to be impressed and inspired by the Sacramento region ’ s momentum and tenacity . Regional leaders have come together in an unprecedented time in our nation ’ s history to help empower our regional economy . We could not have imagined what our community would face in 2020 , but when dealt with hardships our region worked tirelessly to put together a plan for recovery and resiliency .
The Greater Sacramento Economic Council spearheads community-led direction to attract , grow and scale new businesses , develop advanced industries , and create jobs and investment throughout a six-county region . While we continue to welcome new companies to our region and engage prospects , we find great momentum and interest in the Greater Sacramento market . With this effort , the region has seen a significant increase in companies interested in relocating to our area since COVID-19 due to the ability to work remotely . Since the beginning of July 2020 , in the midst of the pandemic , the organization has connected with six times the number of potential companies than it did in July and August of 2019 .
As the Capital Region of California , the fifth largest economy in the world , our region is a top destination for young , educated talent seeking to live in a region that is approachable , engaging and full of opportunity . Our region boasts over 59,000 employees with in-demand technical skills sought by top tech firms , while our educational institutions continue to produce some of the industry ’ s top talent . Additionally , our proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area creates a shared talent pool competing with comparable metros nationally .
Our region continues to emerge as a hub for innovation in several key industries . The life science cluster will be bolstered by the phase one development of Aggie Square , the 2 millionsquare-foot life science innovation district breaking ground in Sacramento by UC Davis and Wexford Science + Technology
and the future teaching hospital being developed by California Northstate University . The California Mobility Center serves as a catalyst for developing and prototyping emerging mobility technology , and our tech cluster continues to scale with venture investment momentum in software as a service , fintech and other digital sectors .
Woodland is moving forward with a 21st century food and agtech development and Citrus Heights is working on the Sunrise Mall redevelopment , which will provide a home for tradable sectors for generations to come .
There is no denying COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on our economy but I am confident the framework set forward by Greater Sacramento will pave the way forward for recovery . Together we can build a sustainable economy that serves all members of the community by focusing on industries that are environmentally sound , inclusive and tradable in nature with primary goals of regional investment in jobs and resulting economic impact .
We must deliver a new economic model to truly drive onward to regional recovery and we must do this together as one region . It ’ s an honor and privilege to work with our important community members to drive change and help grow investment in the Greater Sacramento region . Thank you for your continued support .
Sincerely ,
Barry Broome President and CEO Greater Sacramento Economic Council
