Bridging the Digital Divide by Jennifer Fergesen
The City of Sacramento is using a portion of its $ 89 million Coronavirus Aid , Relief , and Economic Security Act funds to provide free job training courses in digital and technology-related fields for workers displaced by the pandemic . We checked in with some of the leaders of the programs providing these courses , including Collective6 , Cyber Proud and Digital Upskill Sacramento , to understand why the city is banking on the technology sector to get workers back on their feet .

This year ’ s Chancellor ’ s Innovation Awards at UC Davis recognized two professors , Ramsey Badawi and Simon Cherry , for their invention of Explorer , the world ’ s first total-body positron emission tomography scanner . The PET scanner received Food and Drug Administration approval in 2018 , scanned its first human subject in 2019 , and has since been used in more than 300 research and clinical cases . Cherry answered our questions about the award and what it means for the future of Explorer .
