BEST OF T
The 2026 season feels almost like a new era in WorldSBK, so, in the opinion of some top competitors, who was the best of the best? The best champion, what was the best overall era- and what is each rider’ s personal high point so far?

Understandably for a Spanish rider who has come to WorldSBK from the MotoGP classes, he thinks the greatest WorldSBK Champion of all was Carlos Checa. But not just because he is Spanish, and even now a predecessor within the official Ducati WorldSBK squad.“ I have the number seven for him. I always used to go to Cheste( Valencia) and was always watching on TV to see Carlos winning with the Ducati, running the number seven.” Checa was‘ only’ a one-time World Champion, but as Iker says,“ For me, he was the special one.”
For the golden Superbike era in the past, Iker again goes to that time with Checa at the forefront.“ I want to say the same era, because I was really young then, so I was only from that era in WorldSBK. I know before that there was Bayliss, Haga, Toseland, and so on, but in the end, for me personally, I want to say it is Carlos’ s era. Maybe even I also want to say Jonathan Rea’ s era, because at that time I started to follow WorldSBK a lot.”
The best moment in WorldSBK for Lecuona- personally? Not his breakout win this season at Donington, which may surprise some, but it is Iker’ s first WorldSBK podium of all, at Assen on the Honda in 2022.“ I chose this because I didn’ t expect it in my first year. The important and beautiful aspect was that I had a special crash helmet design with one of my best friends. Honestly, it was one of the best weekends possible. All my friends were in Assen when I took that podium, so for me it was a very special moment.”
