Grow Local
Everybody knows it, right? We all know
that shopping locally and supporting local
organizations benefits our community.
It’s a concept that seems simple enough,
so why doesn’t everyone do it? Maybe
there’s a perception of higher cost or
poorer quality. Maybe you can’t find a
particular good or service here. Or maybe
you think your few purchases don’t really
matter.
What if changing one habit could result in
a stronger local economy, more diversity
in shopping and dining, more revenue for
the city, increased support for our nonprofits, and an overall increase in the
vibrancy of our town? Where do you sign
up, right?
Believe it or not, these are all effects of
spending
your
money
locally.
The Chamber of Commerce is beginning a
new campaign for 2015 called "Grow
Local." There will be more information to
follow, but the bottom line is that
spending our money in Humboldt results
in a better Humboldt. It grows our tax base,
grows our independence and stability, and
grows our town.
As a first step, the leadership of the
Chamber - the President, Vice President,
Past President of the Board along with yours
truly, the Executive Director - will be
putting our dollars where our mouths are.
For the month of January, we will be
shopping exclusively in Humboldt and
recording our experience. We'll use that
experience as a spring board to
better understand our local
economy and develop the details
of the program.
So what’s the idea behind “Grow
Local?”
Why not just call it
“Shop Local” or “Be Local?”
Two reasons.
First, this is
Humboldt. We’re unique and we
wanted a unique program. Our
program will focus not only on
the consumer side of bringing
awareness to buying locally, but
also on the business side of
providing quality goods and
services to our consumers.
Second, this is Humboldt. We’re
known for the Strawberry Festival
and it’s part of our DNA. Just as the
strawberry plant grows and produces
fruit, we believe this program will
grow our market and bear fruit for
this community.
Feel free to join us in this endeavor!
And of course, tell what you find out.
Let's support those that support us!
