SCIENCE OF COLOUR

WRITE A COLOURFUL STORY

WORDWORM ’ S MISSION

Have you ever been accused of being a ‘ green-eyed monster ’? How about a ‘ shrinking violet ’? Have you ever been ‘ caught red-handed ’ or been told off for ‘ screaming blue murder ’? These phrases are so commonplace that we don ’ t really stop to wonder where on Earth they came from ! ‘ Painting the town red ’ has come to mean going out at night and having a totally brilliant time . There are several claims regarding the origin of this phrase ; one story dates all the way back to 1837 when the nobleman , Marquis of Waterford and a group of his friends ran riot in the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray , literally painting the town ’ s buildings red ! Naughty ! Wordworm would like you to identify a colourful phrase and come up with a thoroughly convincing ( and ideally completely bananas ) backstory for its existence . Aim for about 500 words – extra points if you manage to make your story bonkers and plausible ! Get your thinking cap on !
Here ’ s some examples to get you started – but if you know one that isn ’ t on the list , we ’ d love to hear it !
