In a world where we are taught to stand up for ourselves and fight back when we have been
mistreated, it would almost seem strange to refer you to the example of Jesus. Jesus stood
before Caiaphas and Pontius Pilate in the last hours of His life, accused of so many things that
He had not done and had every right to a good defence, but He did not call upon an articulate
defence counsel, or ten thousand angels from heaven to rescue Him, instead He stood there
just like Isaiah said, “…he was led like a lamb to the slaughter…” (Isaiah 53 v 7). He could have
answered every question they directed at Him yet He chose to stand quietly and to not
respond to the accusations made against Him. There was, on His mind, no desire for revenge
or eventhe desire to be seen to be right in the world that is so wrong, but He stood, quietened
by the love of God, His Father, for Him. He had perfect confidence in His Father’s ability to
fulfil His will for Him and He experienced full well the quietening effect of God’s love, even as
He hung on the cross and the Pharisees mocked Him and told Him to bring Himself down from
the cross. It must have been tempting for Him because He knew full well that He was
