2. If we put the right emphasis into feeding the root of the tree, keeping it well watered, we will as a result bear the fruit in season that God would want for us to bear. The root needs to be constantly nourished and watered and cared for so that fruit can be born. We feed the root of our spiritual lives by taking seriously the spiritual disciplines that the Bible speaks of by way of prayer, Bible reading and fellowship. 3. At the outset of this study let us make sure that we are engraved into the right vine, because the vine of Christ is the only vine that will bear fruit with an eternal significance. Prayer Thought: As you pray today, won’t you contemplate these three things and ensure that you have found the true vine and that you are caring more for the root than you do for the fruit, this will give us a good start for the week that is to follow. The three passages of Scripture above would indicate that there are three aspects of fruit bearing. Number one;fruit that is born as a product of spiritual labour.Matthew 6 speaks of private good works where it suggests that your acts of kindness and goodness should be done in private with the knowledge that God sees them even if men do not. It speaks also of the private place of prayer where there is an intimacy between you and God that excludes other people. How beautiful it is to know that God sees and acknowledges our good works and acts of kindness and stores up treasures for us in heaven, even though men down here on earth may not see it.
