instantaneous repentance. When we mourn over sin we take sin seriously, we stop justifying it, rationalising it, excusing it, and making it less than it really is. It offends God and it hurts us; that people, is why we mourn over it. Prayer Thought: Take a few moments to evaluate your attitude towards sin. Maybe for whatever reason, it has become less than it should be, won’t you ask God to reactivate your spiritual conscience. This may lead you to the point of repentance, but what a great place to be. Tuesday Reading: John 14 v 15 – 16 Please note today that our focus changes from looking at sin to looking at the Holy Spirit. The verse says “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.” In the New Testament passage you read, the Holy Spirit is referred to as being the Comforter. When we mourn over sin, as we should, the Holy Spirit moves in to reassure us that we are still loved and that God’s purpose for our lives can still be completed. One of the main functions of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin, but also to raise us to a stronger position. I will over the next five days, share two fundamental roles of the Holy Spirit per day with you. #1: The Comforter understands the Chronic nature of our Condition. The Holy Spirit is fully familiar with the challenge that our humanity brings to us. He is totally familiar with the fact that we have a sinful nature. He understands that we have a sinful bias and that even at our best, we are still incredibly weak. The fact that this spiritual condition is a chronic one, means that it is here to stay. He is totally sympathetic to our plight and does not stand in judgement over us when we fall. It is like a child with a broken leg who when he tries to walk he just keeps on falling. No-one in their right mind would reprimand that child because clearly it is evident the reason that he is so incapable of walking is because his leg is broken. It will, however, engender within most people a deep compassion and sympathy that will cause an adult to draw alongside that child in order to help him. This is similar in type to what the Holy Spirit does on our behalf.
