Bathroom
We couldn ’ t use the park ’ s toilets or shower because the electricity and water were out of commission for several days in Texas . Again , our boondocking experience and provisions saved the day .
Because we were winterized when we left Michigan , we still had RV antifreeze on board , so we used that for flushing the toilet until it ran out . Then we resorted to using freshwater from our jugs . ( I figured the initial use of antifreeze would help the black tank from freezing up , and it did .)
Not knowing how long we ’ d be without water , we limited our toilet flushing . Later , we flushed a lot of extra water into the tank to make dumping through our macerator easier .
We also weren ’ t taking showers . Instead , we used a no-rinse liquid soap we have come to rely upon when boondocking . There are several brands of body wipes available that can help with this , too . It ’ s easier to go without showers in the winter than in the summer when high temperatures and more outdoor activities can make bathing frequently more important . But even
in the summer , the no-rinse soap or treated body wipes can help stretch the time between showers .
Be prepared
The Boy Scout motto is “ Be prepared .” And RVers should take that to heart . When we headed for Galveston , Texas , to escape winter , little did we know it would hunt us
down ! And regardless of the season , power outages , water problems , food shortages , and more can occur anywhere at any time . So make sure you ’ re ready not just for the glamping trip you have planned but the camping trip you might suddenly find yourself having instead .
