Kodiak Island – set aside funds to make this flight happen . Marc & Trish took a $ 400 floatplane trip to a lake , fished with the bears and bald eagles , and then had a glacier tour on the plane ride back .
They said Alaska feels like a pilgrimage . Some people caravan there because of this . They have schedules of when they leave , come back , and where they go . If you come across a caravan , get in front of them ! You need to be at least a day before them , or you will get stuck in a large crowd , and many things may be sold out .
Note that Alaska can be a completely different trip depending on the year , how the weather is , how the roads are , how the mosquitoes are , etc . And it changes every year .
The orange sunsets ! The mountains light on fire and they turn from purple to pink for over an hour , and there is nothing like it . Scottsdale is the mecca of vacationland with golf , baseball spring training , and a lot of fun urban things to do . Flagstaff , Sedona , Tucson , Grand Canyon , and Lake Havasu are great for outdoor experiences . Lake Powell is in Utah , but it is stunning .
Marc said a drive in their “ Top 10 ” goes from Horseshoe Bend to Southern Utah , around Lake Powell , with these gorgeous mountains that look like Sedona on the way . It is just stunning .
Arizona is actually Marc and Trish ’ s backyard , and yet they had ignored it for far too long . As they like to say , start small and start now ! Maybe you can ’ t afford or have time for a major cross-country trip . But some of the best things to see may be right in the area where you live .
“ Our philosophy is that the grass is greener where you water it , and that definitely applies to your backyard ,” Marc said .
