What to Do When You ’ re INTERCEPTED
INTERVIEW WITH JOHN “ RAIN ” WATERS AND TREVOR “ BOAT ” BOSWELL
JOHN “ RAIN ” WATERS : Awesome . Happy to be here at Oshkosh 22 . I ’ m sitting with my good buddy Boat , and we ’ re going to talk a little bit about interceptions . Every year , 30 to 40 pilots actually get intercepted by fighter aircraft because they violate a TFR . They do something they ’ re not supposed to . And Boat is the guy here to hopefully prevent that and give you a little bit of information on how to avoid it , and if it does happen , what you need to do . So Boat , thanks for joining me .
TREVOR “ BOAT ” BOSWELL : Absolutely Rain . It ’ s great to be here at Oshkosh and see you . Excited to be here .
RAIN : So can you just give me a real quick little bit of your background and what you ’ re doing now ?
BOAT : Sure . All right . So what I ’ m doing now , is I ’ m the NORAD Civilian Aviation Education and Training program lead , which means I come out to air shows and I send other folks out to air shows . And we go and educate the general aviation population on how to avoid temporary flight restrictions , TFRs , and hopefully prevent an interception from occurring .
My background is , I ’ m an F16 pilot . I was actually your instructor pilot at one point , so I apologize upfront . But I ’ m an F16 pilot by trade , with about 1800 total hours of instruction as an aggressor pilot , a regular combat pilot , and an instructor . I have about 18 and a half total years of military service at this point .
