It Was The Ice What movEd
There is a long-standing myth that Edward Smith , the captain of RMS Titanic , was trying to win the Blue Riband award for the fastest passenger liner . Could this have made him stray north into iceberg territory ?
But that makes no sense ! Titanic was built for luxury ! Ed
Exactly ! She was weighed down with treasures and fine furnishings . ( Not to mention a shed load of people , ed .)
She had very little chance of breaking any speed records .

It also doesn ’ t make sense if you look at Titanic ’ s route . It doesn ’ t head north at all . In fact , we now know the ice conditions in the collision area were the worst for 50 years . Nobody expected that much ice to be so far south , but the winter of 1911-1912 was mild , causing more icebergs to break free in the Arctic , then travel south on ocean currents . Yet , the story persists . Probably because it has a whiff of scandal about an irresponsible captain .
So , why did people think a northerly route would help Titanic travel faster ? Ed
It wouldn ’ t have made the ship travel at a higher speed , but it could have shortened the route .
Eh ? How would it do that ?
