That sometimes means bringing opposite sides of an issue together to forge a mutual solution . The aftermath of bringing restaurant owners ’ concerns to City Hall , for example , was a streamlined “ permit simplicity ” process that now enables entrepreneurs to obtain building permits in a day . In return , applicants assume liability for errors , an indemnification for the city that saves review time and has also improved the quality of plans being submitted for approval .
More importantly , the process opened up a dialogue with city officials . “ Now the city is a partner and will tell us what we need to do and how they will help us get there ,” Mulvaney says .
‘ Catalytic Projects that Define the Region ’ Region Business also focuses on more visible landmark projects that CEO Joshua Wood calls “ catalytic projects that define the region .” The group was among the earliest behind-the-scenes supporters for keeping the Sacramento Kings in town and constructing the Golden 1 Center .
Then-Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson credits Region Business for leading two broad-based public campaigns to save Sacramento ’ s arena deal with the NBA . “ Josh Wood ’ s persistence uncovered that outside groups were funding campaigns to block the arena ,” Johnson says . “ Josh led the effort to collect thousands of petition withdrawals to keep the city financing package off the ballot . This was instrumental in Sacramento winning in court so that the city could move forward with the transformational Golden 1 Center project .”
More recently , Region Business played a similar role in supporting the Wilton Rancheria ’ s Sky River Casino that recently opened near Elk Grove . “ They were part of a team that helped organize community support , advocated for our MOU with the city council and supported our gaming compact in the legislature ,” says Tribal Chairman Jesus Tarango .
