‘ A Destination and a Beacon of Activity ’ The story goes that former Governor Pat Brown used to dart across the street from the Governor ’ s Mansion in his swim trunks to jump in the pool at the Mansion Inn , once downtown Sacramento ’ s premier hotel . That site is now Mansion Apartments , a four-level complex with 186 units and over 3,000 feet of retail space ( and yes , a pool ) with a design that pays homage to the Mansion Inn ’ s Mid-Century Modern style . The pet-friendly location just started leasing and residents are moving in .
“ The redevelopment of the site has transformed a formerly abandoned and blighted building into a community which soon will be home to nearly 300 people ,”
says Brad Des Jardin , president and CEO of DesCor Builders , which recently completed construction on the project at 16th and H streets for SKK Developments . “ The Mansion is bound to become a destination and a beacon of activity for the entire Midtown area .”
The A . J ., the first mixed-use residential development in the massive 244-acre Railyards project that will double the size of downtown Sacramento , is now under construction and is expected to get its first residents in February . Its 345 units are a mix of market-rate and affordable housing and , with the companion project The Telegrapher that will break ground next summer , will establish a gateway and identity for the city ’ s newest neighborhood .
“ The A . J . is named for A . J . Stevens , a former master mechanic for the railyards known for both his inventiveness and thoughtful leadership ,” explains Josh
Leachman , LDK Ventures ’ vice president for development at the Railyards . “ The concept of The Telegrapher is about communication , both in enabling interaction of the people living in this space and in the manifestation of the building forms . For example , when viewing the elevations , the patterning of the metal panel pulls from the concept of communicating through morse code as telegraphers once communicated to those coming to and from Sacramento by rail .”
Leachman says LDK views the Railyards as a tapestry that will take years to complete and that the pandemic led to a rethinking of how to approach urban multifamily developments by incorporating more open space and facilitating a live-work environment . Leasing at The Telegrapher is expected to begin in fall 2025 .
