New places to stay , new places to go , new places to live and work . Here ’ s a quick look at some notable construction projects that are taking shape across a variety of sectors in the Capital Region .
Hospitality and Gaming
Two new hotels will soon bring much-needed rooms to the Downtown Sacramento core . Hilton is currently accepting reservations for The Exchange , a total makeover of a former office building at Fourth and J streets , for stays starting October 5 . Part of Hilton ’ s Curio Collection , The Exchange will feature a rooftop bar called The Willow that will offer dramatic views of Downtown and the valley beyond . The project was developed by California Fruit Building LLC , a consortium that includes Yuba City-based Dale Investments and local development and management company American Hospitality Services .
Just a few blocks away , work is finishing on the Hyatt Centric City Center hotel in the building that formerly housed the historic Marshall Hotel at Seventh and L streets next to the Golden 1 Center . The revitalization of the historic site will incorporate the Marshall ’ s beautiful brick facade into a modern 11-story tower . The project developer is Presidio Companies , whose portfolio includes several other hotels in the region , including Rancho Cordova ’ s DoubleTree Suites . Sacramento ’ s Centric will be the fourth in California and is within easy walking distance of the State Capitol .
The Wilton Rancheria tribe and Boyd Gaming broke ground on the area ’ s newest resort casino , Sky River Casino , in March at the site of the abandoned “ Ghost Mall ” along Highway 99 in Elk Grove . The Wilton Rancheria tribe is indigenous to Sacramento County and more than 60 % of its approximately 700 members still live within the county . The casino is expected to feature 2,000 slot machines , 84 table games , dining , event space and a hotel . Completion is scheduled for late next year .

Industrial
Five industrial buildings are actively under construction by commercial real estate asset services provider Buzz Oates at Metro Air Park , the massive warehouse and logistics development adjacent to Sacramento International Airport . Drew Bocook , portfolio and acquisitions manager at Buzz Oates , says one of the buildings is a 105,000-square-foot facility being custom built for General Produce that is expected to be completed in November . The four other buildings , which total nearly 1.3 million square feet , are scheduled to be ready for occupancy by the second quarter of 2022 .
“ We will deliver just under 1.9 million square feet of logistics space within the next 10 months out at Metro Air Park ,” Bocook says . “ Additionally , we have another one to two million square feet in the planning phase .” Even with the latest buildings , Buzz Oates has still developed less than half of the 625 acres it owns at the site .
In West Sacramento , Nor-Cal Beverage is building a 422,000-square-foot warehouse to complement its existing one of just under a half-million square feet . The company also sold 22 acres of property in the Southport area to Reno-based Dermody Properties , which is building its third LogistiCenter-branded industrial center in the city . LogistiCenter at Southport is a state-of-the-art , Class A , cross-dock 226,272-square-foot industrial facility divisible to 40,000 square feet .
Retail
Shopping options in Elk Grove continue to grow with the completion of two of the first four phases of The Ridge at the southeast corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and Bruceville Road . The third phase of the shopping center is underway with completion planned for the fourth quarter of this year , says Kelly Rule , Pappas Investments ’ senior vice president of leasing . The final phase will likely be completed in 2023 . Rule says that including the Costco warehouse store already on the site , The Ridge will include approximately 382,000 square feet of retail space ranging from 1,100 to 40,000 square feet .
“ Some of the brands in the center are new to the market coming from other major metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Los Angeles ,” Rule says . She adds that Pappas is also planning a new shopping center east of The Ridge that she expects to include well-known , high-end lifestyle retailers .
Multifamily Housing
Two new projects that take advantage of West Sacramento ’ s riverside setting may help make a dent in the region ’ s housing shortage . MBK Rental Living held a grand opening on July 9 for The Strand , a 408- unit upscale apartment community on 20 acres at Lighthouse Drive and Douglas Street . Six floor plans range from 562 to 1,187 square feet and offer easy access to
