We ’ re in the middle of a five-year , multi-million dollar contract for SMUD ( for cable replacement ) in various locations around the Greater Sacramento Region and we have numerous residential subdivisions we are helping build and provide infrastructure for in Rocklin , Lincoln , Elk Grove , Natomas and El Dorado Hills .
What does your company bring to projects like the Amazon building ?
Our crews are extremely experienced — several with over 40 years in joint trench — and include uniquely trained SMUD installers and PG & E-certified gas installers . Additionally , our project engineers , project managers and superintendents work closely with the inspectors and other trades every day of the week to ensure efficiency and effective oversight of this highly complex project with very tight schedules . By having the experience , manpower , unique equipment and expertise , we have been able to double up on crews , run equipment side by side and supply the manpower and resources needed to continuously beat the schedule .
Kevin Ferreira Executive Director Sacramento-Sierra ’ s Building and Construction Trades Council
Your organization represents more than 15,000 union construction workers in Sacramento , Amador , El Dorado , Nevada , Placer , Sierra and Yolo counties . What upcoming projects are you excited about in our region ?
The Capitol Annex and California Northstate University Hospital . One is modernizing the State Capitol ( to address issues including ADA accessibility , hazardous materials removal , lack of space for legislative staff , antiquated systems and inefficient public spaces ) and the CNU project is converting an old , iconic facility ( the former Sleep Train Arena in Natomas ) into a new landmark project ( that will include a new 250-bed , 475,000-square-foot medical center and teaching hospital ).
What do you think your industry will look like post-pandemic ?
We think there will be greater diversity in the workforce . Our apprenticeships have never been more diverse than they are right now and we plan to continue to create … opportunities ( to get people ) into the building trades . Our main partner for outreach is People Working Together ( a nonprofit that provides access to skills development , vocational training , housing assistance and other related resources for those reentering the workforce ), as well as some of the major minority nonprofits in the region .
John Home Vice President of Operations Rudolph and Sletten

The Clifford L . Allenby Building , a new building for the California Health and Human Services Agency at 1215 O St . in Sacramento ; UC Center Sacramento for Public Policy , a project for UC Davis in Downtown Sacramento ; Hall of Justice , a new courthouse in Santa Rosa for the Superior Court of California and the County of Sonoma ; a new skilled nursing and memory care facility for Yountville Veterans Home with the Department of General Services ; and projects for the Sutter Roseville Medical Center Master Plan 2016 and expansions of the OR and PACU .
How has your industry changed due to the events of the past year ?
Employers will continue to sort out how their workforce is returning to work and how a hybrid approach will work . With construction , you can ’ t phone it in or virtually meet to build — you need to be present to physically manage the project … We will continue to see a desire for what we ’ ve been delivering in highly sustainable projects : well-ventilated office space , top-end air filtration , “ cleanability ” of finishes and other protective measures to reduce or eliminate airborne transmission .
