aged for economic development and inclusive
community outcomes, with examples
already operating at Drexel University, Yale
University, Brown University and Washington
University, among others. Aggie Square
is Wexford’s first knowledge community on
the West Coast.
In Wexford’s proposal for Aggie Square,
the developer wrote, it “approaches innovation
districts not as a series of buildings, but
as a porous, diverse, inclusive knowledge
community that creates inclusive public
spaces and an engaging pedestrian experience
which can unify all of the elements of a
live, work, play, learn environment.”
Robert Segar, Aggie Square’s planning
director, says, “This is a new kind of campus
for co-location where university research,
teaching and community-engaged work will
share a location with public and private partners,
including business, industry, educational
and community-based organizations,
and everybody can leverage each other’s
activities.” He says, “This project can transform
Sacramento’s innovation environment
and position the area for future developments
we can’t even imagine right now.”
BUILDING EXCITEMENT
When built out through three phases, Aggie
Square will occupy 25 acres of UC Davis’
Sacramento campus. The first phase of
about 8 acres is along Stockton Boulevard
and a new segment of Third Avenue that will
run onto campus and will feature 1 million
square feet among four buildings that will
facilitate academic programs, scientific
research, business partnerships, community
collaborations and a residential component.
“We’re in the design process for phase
one, with an environmental impact report
due this summer,” says Segar. “We’ll be
seeking approvals from the university
(board of regents), the approval agency
for the project, in November. After that,
construction begins in early 2021, and if the
schedule holds, the first buildings will open
24-30 months later.”
The first phase will include two life sciences,
technology and engineering buildings
with state-of-the-art lab space of about
500,000 square feet. Another building for
lifelong learning programs will consist of
