“ The way we develop our program is to ask employers what they need and then put that in our curriculum ,” says Amy Schulz , dean of career , continuing and technical education .
That curriculum includes hands-on practical education for a wide range of skills , including welding , cybersecurity , robotics , advanced manufacturing techniques and CNC machining . The school also holds three academy classes a year to train firemen and regularly trains EMTs and medical assistants .
To stay abreast of what employers want , the school hosts two job fairs each year that draw businesses from Placer County and beyond . That includes Cirque du Soleil , which employs up to five technicians for each stage performer and makes two recruiting trips a year to the Rocklin campus .
But in addition to the job fairs , Osladil maintains a strong personal connection to about 100 of the region ’ s employers . “ We maintain a close relationship and I know most of them face-to-face ,” he says . Personal visits also help him learn how each employer uses graduates , since many employers use skills like mechatronics in unique ways .

Classic Education Builds Leadership Skills To help students move from school to the job market , Sierra College is developing a new Student Assistance Fund Endowment in collaboration with the Sierra College District and City of Rocklin .
“ Even if students are receiving a free education from scholarships , they still have financial needs for some basic things like transportation and mental health counseling ,” says Elizabeth Sorg , an associate management analyst at Rocklin ’ s Office of the City Manager who is developing the endowment pending approval from the city council . “ Our goal is to get students into the job market quickly by focusing on their studies and , if they lost a job in the pandemic , help them find a new career in the career development curriculum .”
At the pre-college level , John Adams Academy has seen the demand for its curriculum steeped in the Socratic method nearly double since its founding in 2010 . In addition to its campuses in Lincoln and Roseville , it ’ s meeting the demand by expanding its campus off Latrobe Road in El Dorado Hills , adding a high school to its K-12 facility and a performing arts center .
“ We talk about great ideas and have the students discuss them with their classmates ,” says Dean Forman , the academy ’ s founder . “ This teaches them how to think and analyze problems and prepares them for any job — and they will be good at it .”
Kyriakos Tsakopoulos agrees that a liberal arts education is valuable for success in the business world . His familyrun University Development Foundation recently donated 1,300 acres in Placer County to Hillsdale College , a small Michigan-based school that intends to eventually build a campus on a portion of the property . “ My father began the effort to bring a new or expanded college to the area ,” says Tsakopoulos , referring to renowned developer Angelo Tsakopoulos . “ He believed that learning and education can have the biggest impact on the world .”
