Multi-faceted Leader Creates Top Workplace
Paul Harney guides and oversees critical components of e . Republic , a media , research and events company connecting the public sector — specifically state and local governments and education — with private sector suppliers of technology solutions .
e . Republic serves government professionals , including IT managers , CIOs and elected officials , who need assistance with cyber security , data management and more . The firm publishes the long-running Government Technology magazine , manages websites and imparts information at nationwide events sponsored by private sector partners looking to reach and lead in that market .
Harney , who has been the CFO since 1997 , oversees the accounting department and typical financial responsibilities . He officially added the COO title in 2014 , having taken on those additional duties for several years . e . Republic ’ s digital advertising department , event registration team , community development , design and production department and business optimization team all report to Harney as COO .
“ I love working with my team ,” says Harney , one of several long-tenured people at the firm . “ They ’ ve been with me a long time and they ’ re invaluable . The people who report directly to me are smart , creative and talented … always looking for answers . I ’ m really proud of them .”
One of Harney ’ s goals is to make e . Republic one of the best companies to work for . “ Employee retention and acquisition are so important ,” he says . “ We ’ re in a fast growth mode right now so it ’ s critical to be competitive . There are many skilled people out there , but also a lot of good companies to work for . To get the best people , we have to be the best workplace .”
Seeing imminent growth , Harney concludes , “ The public sector is strong with a lot of money for IT so it ’ s a great time to make government service better for everyone . We ’ ll continue to improve our offerings , add new products and hire more people . Even though we were incorporated in 1984 , we currently have the spirit of a startup .”
