06 Circle Between The Lines March, 2014 | Page 54

Even though iPhones do have a circular home button, that is not enough to overpass the squares. In addition, it is a tie for hand watches, made in both circles and squares. These are just a few of our soldiers amongst others like square shaped paper, bike wheels, car wheels, blankets and much more. At the end of our daily battles, we do not kill the losing team or do anything that violent but just think of ways in which we could help people develop and live better lives. So in a way, we fight for a better world. It may seem like a foolish battle but it is less foolish than the battles humans fight. In ancient times, squares have been used when humans needed to build big places for their temples or shelters. The Aztec temples, Egyptian pyramids, and even the Mesopotamian Ziggurat temples were all built using rectangular bricks. While squares were in the lead during the ancient ages, during more modern times, circles have started to see the light. The Industrial Revolution led to a proliferation in the manufacturing of cars, all of which used circular wheels. Not just one but four per each car. I could go on and on explaining the history of our shapes but then it would take too long and we have no time to lose. We, circles and squares have finally made the decision to come forward towards human beings and make known our battle. We need your help. This is because there is an enemy in our midst, one that is threatening to interrupt upon our sacred and traditional battle. The enemy shape has been slowly increasing in numbers and recently, they have proliferated so rapidly and voraciously that circles and squares alike felt that something had to be done. I must first introduce the enemy. You will know it by its vulgar name; the heart shape. Ugh. Even among shapes, it is treated as the most ugly, obscene, and lewd shape. Do not mistake my intentions, it is not jealousy that guides me, I am simply trying to show you the true nature of the “heart”. Besides its repulsive outward appearance, the interior of the heart is also extremely repulsive. It is selfish in its very essence and especially when humans have grown attached to it, the heart just sticks onto the human and never let go like a leech sucking people’s lifeblood. While squares and circles have been companions to humans, helping them develop, learn, and grow, the heart has only brought tragedies. Just to name a few, it has brought along the demise of Marcus Antonius, leader of the Romans, when the heart led it towards Cleopatra and blinded his eyes from seeing the truth. 52 Its destructive nature is evident, yet people try to grab hold of it and they long for the heart more than the circle or the square, which is something we shapes cannot understand. What is more astounding is that recently, human beings have even made a day to celebrate love and the heart. On this day, human beings all write letters, mostly on square paper (thank God) to each other announcing their love for each other. Then, they start to draw hearts all over their letters, they even draw them on their faces, buy shirts with hearts on them, and even start to decorate the whole world with heart shaped things. We know perfectly well that the heart shape stands for love but it is evident that human beings take a much too gentle and open approach to this shape. Heart shapes are more atrocious than you humans think. Although you blindly embrace them and all the things that they tags along with it like love, tenderness,
