HORNET PRIDE
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

For Greg Aguirre , CEO of Capital Rivers Commercial , a rewarding career in commercial real estate began with a strong foundation made possible by Sacramento State ’ s College of Business Administration / Real Estate and Land Use Affairs Program . Aguirre spent his first 10 years after graduating from Sac State in corporate real estate working for companies including Armstrong Development , JPMorgan Chase & Co . and locally based Sleep Train before eventually starting Capital Rivers Commercial , a commercial real estate brokerage and development firm that is quickly becoming an industry leader by blending leading technology with an oldschool work ethic .

“ Sac State opened the door to the many career options available in real estate and land use . It not only gave me a good understanding of the industry , but provided valuable connections who have become mentors or business partners throughout my career ,” Aguirre explains .
While attending Sac State , Aguirre was so committed to getting into the industry he not only had several internships including Centex Homes , Grubb & Ellis , and Camray Development , but also took the necessary classes to earn his real estate license . To pay the bills ( and have some “ beer money ”), any downtime was spent researching property ownership , visiting the planning department and local Stewart Title office , attending planning meetings , knocking on doors , sending letters and anything else it took to sell in-fill development property to a local custom home builder .
Sac State ’ s Real Estate and Land Use Affairs program provides a solid understanding of all aspects of the development process including design , feasibility analysis , land use regulation , market and location analysis , and negotiation . “ For one of my classes , I remember putting together a full financial model and comprehensive market analysis for a Sacramento multi-family property . I learned so much from that assignment that I still use those calculations and formulas today ,” Aguirre says .
“ The success we have had at Capital Rivers Commercial is due in large part to the education , experiences and relationships I gained from Sac State ,” Aguirre notes . “ It is our duty to support the entrepreneurial growth of our future leaders by supporting programs like Sac State ’ s Real Estate and Land Use Affairs Program .”
“ Nearly half of our team are Sac State graduates and we ’ ve had a lot of success with Sac State interns and hires ,” says Aguirre , adding , “ Stingers Up !”
“ One of the best lessons I learned from Sac State alumnus Dale Carlsen was to surround yourself with great people , treat them well and make everyone successful .”
