Sacramento State ’ s Department of Construction Management is among the nation ’ s best , producing roundly educated and experienced graduates , utilizing top professionals as instructors and mentors , and acting as a pipeline between a skilled workforce and employers .
“ Our industry advisory board , the Sacramento Construction Management Education Foundation ( SCMEF ), makes us unique ,” says Mikael Anderson , department chair and professor . “ I visit universities nationwide , and our advisory board of industry leaders is one of the most involved and impressive regarding student engagement , teaching , fundraising , scholarships and supporting student competitions .”
Tony Moayed , CEO of Tricorp Group , Inc . and a co-founder of the SCMEF , has a rich relationship with Sac State ’ s CM Department that dates back to 1997 and includes teaching Advanced Estimating and coaching students for the ASC Student Competition in Reno . He says , “ The SCMEF mentors and fundraises in support of student programs , and the CM program ’ s excellent education and student

The Sacramento region ’ s robust construction industry enables CM students to intern with a wide variety of employers . Students can also intern part-time while attending Sac State full-time , giving them a strong foothold with employers and allowing them to find their ideal career path . Anderson says , “ Through internships , students are building their careers even before they graduate , and companies have a chance to sample potential full-time hires .”
Augmenting the full-time faculty are about 30 part-time instructors — lawyers , business owners , engineers , construction managers and more — who teach in the evenings . “ Our students are getting hands-on instruction and real-life insight ,” Anderson says .
Tracked for 12 years , Sac State ’ s CM students have 100 % job placement , even during economic downturns , and often multiple job offers . “ Thanks to our industry involvement , employers know our students are educated , experienced , and can hit the ground running ,” concludes Anderson .
