Headquartered in Sacramento , InterWest has strong connections to Sac State . “ We have many Sac State graduates hired on our team and a robust internship program that brings students to us each year ,” says President and CEO Keith Schuler , a Sac State alum with a Finance and Marketing degree . “ With input from the College of Business , we launched our internship program in 2017 and are proud that it ’ s attracting so many young people to the insurance industry .”
InterWest should see about 10 to 12 new interns this summer . “ Our goal is to introduce college students to possible careers in insurance , either with a brokerage or a carrier partner ,” says Dana Hayes , Human Resources Organizational Training and Development manager . “ It ’ s been very successful , as we ’ ve had 33 interns so far — including 11 from Sac State — and have hired 50 % of them , including five from Sac State . We ’ ve extended internship offers to four Sac State students this year as well .”
More than 30 mentors from various InterWest departments help interns explore the multiple facets of the insurance industry . “ The interns ’ progress throughout the 10- week program is energizing for our mentors and a pleasure for all of us to witness ,” says Hayes . “ Most interns actually become interested in pursuing an insurance career and even know their area of interest , too .” InterWest nominates interns for the annual Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers scholarships and every year , some are chosen as recipients — a reflection of a strong program . As the program grows each year , InterWest is proud to help open the door to opportunities in the insurance field .
