ACRE / BOMA OFFICE GUIDE
SKK Developments
Address : 2409 L Street , Suite 200 , Sacramento 95816 Architecture and Interior Design : NORR and PDG Interiors Furniture : PDG Interiors Contractor : Legend Construction
Since 1987 , SKK Developments has been building vibrant communities in the Greater Sacramento area and through the Pacific Northwest , so it ’ s no surprise their new location on L Street is equally exciting .
Originally designed in 1975 as a medical building for dentists , the structure originally featured seven-foot ceilings and small patient rooms . Valerie Hoffman of architecture firm NORR says the space felt “ too compressed ,” so the ceilings are now open to expose wood tresses and mechanical ducting . Victoria Tanforan of PDG Interiors says the space feels modern but still warm .
“ The exterior of the building showcases natural wood in such a beautiful way and so I wanted to keep that feeling on the interior as well ,” Tanforan says . To support the busy SKK team , minimalism was mixed with organization in the form of furniture layout , technology and storage solutions — functional meets minimal . Open desks and a private conference room with a glass enclosure allows for a consistent open feeling and also enhances collaboration . There is also an aspect of comfort for peers , friends and clients who visit .
Art fills the walls , adding to the experience . Plus , you may see baklava and wine set out for all to enjoy thanks to SKK owner and manager Sotiris Kolokotronis ’ Greek roots .
Hoffman says the biggest challenge during the nine-month project was retaining the insulation in the ceiling while maintaining an open atmosphere . “ We used a new spray-on insulation and covered it with polyethene , the same material used in FedEx packaging ,” she says . “ The structural wood beams were enhanced with vinyl tile to match the flooring .”
“ For me , the stand-out element of this office is most definitely not furniture or paint or layouts — it ’ s how personal the space is through art and energy ,” Tanforan says .
