Studio W Architects ’ newly completed Sacramento Studio in midtown is housed in a building constructed in the 1950s that once housed the area ’ s staple burger purveyor , Nationwide Freezer Meats . Much like the rest of midtown , with rustic building façades housing fun and trendy retail spaces and restaurants , the Sacramento Studio is almost like a playground .
The single-story , 8,000-square-foot office building has a lot of character , some from its original bones . Brian Whitmore , Studio W Architects ’ president and CEO , says the wood features of the building have been accentuated .
“ The building has beautiful wood bow trusses which we exposed and gave the building further volume , which gave it a nice character and brought back history in a modern environment to balance historical elements ,” Whitmore says . The exposed wood translates to the office space below to promote collaboration and innovation amongst staff . There are also many writable surfaces , glass partitions in an open office area and glass barn doors . Part of the design emanates from the Studio W corporate colors , with various shades of white , black , grey and red in the carpet , light fixtures , cabinetry and paint to reinforce the brand image .
The renovation and design process began in late 2020 and was completed in September 2021 . With any historic building , a lot of energy and electrical codes had to be brought up to date . Whitmore says the entire front half of the building and its roof had to be completely replaced .
About 75 percent of the building is office space for 18 staff members , with room to grow . The remainder is dedicated to dining and communal areas . About 25 percent of the office space is dedicated to Whitmore ’ s classic and exotic car collection , including a 1987 red Ferrari .
