New CEO Sets Sights on Reaching New Heights

Dwayne Crenshaw is ideal as the new CEO of the Greater Sacramento Urban League ( GSUL ). His background is rich with the kind of knowledge and experience needed to advance GSUL ’ s mission and reach new heights .

Crenshaw , a native of San Diego , has been in the community-building , social justice and equity sectors for 20 years and has served as a chief executive of nonprofit organizations for 17 of those years . Most recently , he co-founded and led the nonprofit RISE San Diego with a mission of fostering urban civic engagement and leadership development .
Crenshaw also is no newcomer to the Sacramento scene , having earned his master ’ s degree in government from Sacramento State and working as a policy aide in the State Capitol in the 1990s serving such lawmakers as former lieutenant governor Cruz Bustamante and former Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O ’ Connell while both were assembly members .
“ I ’ m excited to be back in Sacramento to help position GSUL as a policy player in advancing equity and building an inclusive economy ,” Crenshaw says . “ I ’ m also hopeful my strong background in workforce and community development will serve me well in sustaining and growing GSUL ’ s flagship jobs and housing programs .”
In addition to building upon GSUL ’ s flagship programs , Crenshaw will tackle the health and wellness realm with a new campaign , “ Be Well With GSUL ,” which targets health disparities and healthy living .
Crenshaw also anticipates revisiting plans for a mixed-use development on GSUL owned property adjacent to their Del Paso Heights headquarters , as well as partnering with developers and other community organizations on additional community benefitting development opportunities along the Marysville Boulevard and Del Paso Road corridors . He concludes , “ I ’ m ready to get to work partnering with and helping guide our communities to a brighter future .”
