It was up to Brian Whitmore , president and CEO of Studio W Architects , to oversee the “ complete refresh ” of an office building located in Roseville ’ s desirable Douglas Corridor after it was bought by commercial developer and operator Barker Pacific Group .
Originally designed in the late 1980s and early ‘ 90s , the building was in need of extensive updating . To modernize the interior , Whitmore and his team incorporated more shared spaces as well as contrasting materials that make the building feel contemporary but comfortable . “ We wanted to create a social and collaborative environment for people ,” Whitmore says . “ All of the furniture , lighting and features had to support that idea , so we created transient work stations of varying heights — caféheight and seated — where people could come and go .”
The strategic use of materials like wood and glass create a juxtaposition between an “ old-world richness ” and a “ modern , clean ” feel that allows the space to cater to all kinds of tastes as well as stand the test of time . Whitmore says “ you want a feeling of comfort — a home quality — in a workplace ,” especially during a time when commercial properties are looking to appeal to employees returning to the workplace . He also wanted to physically manifest the concept of transparency in the design , placing glass walls between the office suites and the lobby to allow for the flow of natural light and “ speak to the desire to have more collaboration .”
