THE FIRST COMMUNION
“ Now this day will be a memorial to you , and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord ; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance .” Exodus 12:14 NASB
Following the Lord ' s instructions , the Israelites took their chosen lamb and killed it , spreading its blood on the doorposts and roasting the animal to eat with unleavened bread and bitter herbs . The Lord saved those whose doors were marked with the blood of a spotless , male lamb . This was called the Lord ' s Passover .
The first Passover is still celebrated today , just as Jesus did during His last supper , with the ordinance of Holy Communion . With the bread and the cup of Communion , we remember the sinless Lamb of God who was slain to take away the sins of the world . Christ ’ s perfect death fulfilled the requirements of the law . It is by His blood that we can be saved from death — an eternity in hell — and counted as righteous in His sight .
