“ Throughout my 17 years with the City of Stockton , there have always been women equally represented in the C-suite ,” says Connie Cochran , community relations officer . “ Women in leadership are part of our Stockton tradition — a trail blazed by the ( late ) former Mayor Joan Darrah for the generations who followed her .”
The City of Stockton ’ s opportunities for women stem from an unwritten culture where women build on each other ’ s accomplishments , according to Katie Regan , director of performance and data analytics . “ Every individual who takes another step forward is a collective win ,” Regan says .
Last year , the city manager ’ s office rolled out a leadership academy , a summer lecture series for all employees and has consistently provided promotional opportunities . “ The
City of Stockton invests in its employees and encourages us to reach our full potential ,” says Stephanie Ocasio , director of community development . “ From leadership down , our city culture encourages professional growth .”
Local government staff should reflect the community they serve . Success is driven by diversity of thought and perspective , innovative problem solving and a clear performance management system — and the City of Stockton is a leader in these efforts .
