In 1889 , a new club was formed in Sacramento by men who ventured west to find fortune during the Gold Rush and their California-born sons . The members of the exclusive Sutter Club were “ outstanding citizens , accomplished professionals and community leaders .” In 1930 , the Sutter Club moved to its current location in the imposing shadow of the State Capitol . The site had historic architecture and valuable art , but its hallowed halls lacked one very important element : women . The Sutter Club was all-male until about two decades ago , when women were finally welcomed as members into the private club . For our annual Women in Leadership photoshoot , women leaders from the Capital Region joyfully rose to the rooftop on a sunny winter day to celebrate their success and show how much they break barriers .
