In this web-only Next Chapter profile , we check in with Carinne Binda and Rob Cunningham , co-artistic directors of the Sacramento Ballet from 1988 to 2018 . With the shutdown of arts and entertainment venues because of the pandemic , work opportunities for Cunningham — who began staging his own ballets after leaving the company — vanished , and Binda decided to shelter in place with her parents since March to be their caretaker . But they are optimistic about coming opportunities .

Neighborhood Favorite is a new monthly web column that profiles independent restaurants around the Capital Region to showcase the diversity and resilience of our local food entrepreneurs . In the first installment , we visit South Area Market , a Sacramento stalwart that started out selling Southeast Asian ingredients and locally grown produce and now serves Lao specialties such as khao piak and homemade sausage . Its status as a hub for Sacramento ’ s large Lao community helped it stay afloat during the pandemic .
