As you may see, while there is a variety of races in America, the
U.S. population is largely Caucasian. Therefore, people of other
races and ethnic roots are referred to as minority groups and are
sometimes made to feel as such.
For this reason, race plays a huge role in Americans’ views on
society and politics. Because of the idea that everyone should live
together in peace and harmony, undercurrent of tension sometimes
occurs. Race then becomes a taboo subject that one must be
careful not to touch, even in the language they daily use. This gives
birth to political correctness—the way of making sure that the
language you use does not offend members of minority groups.
The #BlackLivesMatter movement and the election victory of the
right-winged Donald Trump are examples of the manifestation of
this racial tension that came bursting out.
