The American flag
The American flag is called
Stars and Stripes, or
sometimes called the Star-
Spangled Banner.
The design, which was made
by a woman called Betty
Ross, has been used since
1777. The 50 stars
represent the 50 states,
while the 13 stripes are the
British colonies that were
the original founding states
of the US. The colours red,
white and blue also have a
meaning.
