Printing did not just help to increase literacy and spread
information, it also played a big part in the standardisation of
English. Following the Chancery Standard, Caxton used the
London dialects when he published books and translations.
As a result, by the end of 15 th century, people living anywhere in
the country spelled the words in the same way and English
started to look more recognisable to us modern people.
