More than 10 years ago , Siemens Mobility hired Camacho-Tejeda as a fitter welder . As a new hire , he joined one of the employee resource groups available to help develop employees to their best potential through information , guidelines , and encouragement and by promoting diversity and inclusion . “ The program helped me set goals to advance my career and encouraged me to pursue more education ,” he says .
The diversity and inclusion programs opened new doors for Camacho-Tejeda as an employee and in his personal life , he says . He did pursue more education , taking classes at American River College in the mornings before work for two years , then volunteering as a teacher ’ s assistant for another two years . His skills and communication abilities improved so much during this time that two significant doors opened : Siemens promoted him to welding specialist , and ARC hired him as an adjunct professor .
“ It was like winning the lottery . I had a promotion with Siemens and an adjunct professor job offered to me at the same time ,” says Camacho-Tejeda . “ I could have become a full-time professor , but didn ’ t want to leave Siemens , so now I teach morning classes before work . Teaching what I love to do is really energizing . Knowledge must be passed along in the community to have real value .”
Camacho-Tejeda teaches blueprint reading and fabrication , and the industry training program with its Introduction to Welding component , a class Siemens Mobility designed and sponsors to help develop welders for hiring opportunities .
