consume . This helps projects that utilize those cables meet California ’ s energy efficiency standards , which require all new commercial construction to meet Zero Net Energy levels ( consuming less energy than they create through conservation measures and generation of renewable power ) by 2030 . In fact , Valley Communications ’ Frydenlund says that for most new construction , “ it ’ s always our overall goal ... to get buildings to Net Zero .”
The 10-story state office building currently under construction at 10th and O Streets in Sacramento is an excellent example of efficiency — it will be both Zero Net Energy and Zero Net Carbon — as well as connectivity . The building will be the first in the country to incorporate a pioneering new system known as Utility Grade Infrastructure , which will be designed and installed as a joint venture between Valley Communications and global networking distributor Anixter . The fully customizable system combines fiber optics and copper in a single cable that can carry data from both internet and operational technology sources faster and further than current cable , with bandwidth capacity of up to 10G to accommodate future growth .
“( Because ) the system can be flexible ... we can create headroom to grow into technology coming in 10 years ,” says Anixter ’ s Northern California district manager Daniel Lowndes . “ Imagine working in a building where your phone unlocks the door , then a computer turns on the lights in your office because it recognizes ( you )... and knows the temperature you want . All of these devices talk to each other on one system and that makes your work more productive and easier .”
