BIZRECYCLING GRANTS SAVE BUSINESSES MONEY
In 2016 , the State of Minnesota mandated that all public entities , commercial buildings and sports facilities recycle at least three types of materials : paper , plastic , glass , metal , and / or organics . BizRecycling experts are helping companies get the job done through a variety of programs .
The organization can conduct a free audit of your waste streams and suggest methods to improve your process or begin to capture valuable resources and divert them from trash bins . Experts provide confidential assessments / recommendations and help guide businesses through the process , including applying for grants , ordering labels , placing bins and training staff .
Grants of up to $ 10,000 are available for businesses and $ 20,000 for apartment buildings to help companies start or improve their recycling program .
BizRecycling recently worked with three companies in the Northeast Metro to improve their recycling programs :
DiaSorin , a biotechnology company , had been interested in reducing their single use paper cups , utensils and ramping up their current recycle collection efforts .
DIaSorin worked with Waste Wise and applied to install a dishwasher , purchase reusable mugs and utensils and attend a Waste Wise led staff training for their green team . Although COVID impacted their office dynamic by limiting staff in office , they were still able to see the positive perception of reducing waste and recycling more from their staff .
R & R Cultivation is an urban mushroom farm located in Roseville . After learning about the BizRecycling program through a neighboring business , R & R Cultivation reached out for assistance starting organics recycling program for their spent mushroom substrate as well as single stream recycling services .
Through the BizRecycling grant , R & R Cultivation obtained equipment including tilt and pallet trucks and a cart lift tool to effectively and safely transport their spent mushroom blocks to their new organics recycling dumpster . Additionally , they purchased reusable packaging containers for their wholesale customers .
Since adding their new hauling services , R & R Cultivation has been able to dramatically reduce their trash through diversion . This includes roughly 5,000 pounds of organics waste and 630 pounds of recyclables diverted weekly . These changes have also allowed R & R Cultivation to reduce their trash services by 75 percent .
As a final mile and specialty delivery company , Summit Deliveries and Logistics was often dealing with tricky to recycle materials such as plastic film and Styrofoam . They reached out to Ramsey County for assistance , and were connected with the BizRecycling program .
With the help of a BizRecycling grant , Summit Deliveries and Logistics purchased a small scale Styrofoam densifier to begin recycling this material . With the densifier , they are able to transform their Styrofoam , and that collected from other businesses , into a valuable commodity .
In the 9 months since starting their Styrofoam recycling program , Summit has densified more than one ton of EPS , which is equivalent to over 100 cubic yards in volume . They have also saved over $ 1,500 in hauling service costs that would have gone to disposal of this material . This operation has become the foundation of a new non-profit organization to promote EPS recycling in metro area businesses .
