The pandemic has forced the Northeast Metro ’ s nonprofits to change the way they do business over the past couple of years . Due to health concerns and staffing shortages , some programs have needed to be cancelled entirely . Others have transformed beyond their creators ’ wildest imaginations .
TSE , Inc .
Take TSE , Inc ., for example . The company ’ s mission is to enrich the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through employment and community connection . When the pandemic first struck in early 2020 , the nonprofit was mandated to shut down completely for three months ( from April-July 2020 ).
“ As we reopened , we had to follow all the COVID rules , making sure people were in a safe environment . That meant people needed to stay six-feet apart and wear masks . Not only that , we also had to make sure people had a safe environment as they were being transported to and from work . We did that by using a clear plastic material to create additional barriers between people being transported in our vehicles ,” said Lynne Megan , President and CEO of TSE , Inc .
At the beginning of 2022 , TSE , Inc ., was back to serving about 65 percent of the people the nonprofit had served previously . “ We have a waiting list of people who want to come back , but don ’ t have enough staff to accommodate them ,” said Megan , who added the shortage comes at a time when there is more opportunity than ever before for the clients they serve .
“ It is easier than it used to be for people with disabilities to get jobs because everyone is looking for workers ,” she said . “ People with disabilities are a viable option to be able to do the work .” Among the 120 or so companies actively employing TSE , Inc ., clients , Cub Foods , Panera Bread and the Staples Fulfillment Center in Arden Hills .
TSE , Inc . has six locations , including its Administrative offices , which often serves as a transportation hub for clients .
