HOW LOCAL GOVERNMENT CAME TO THE RESCUE FOR BOTH BUSINESSES AND CITIZENS IN NEED
Once it became clear the pandemic was going to drastically affect businesses , cities throughout the Northeast Metro began strategizing on ways to support them . Many diverted funds into special accounts that went directly towards keeping the lights on during a difficult time .
“ At VHEDC , we put COVID resources on our website and created small business relief programs . We also worked with our partner local businesses to help provide relief ,” said Liz Moscatelli , Executive Director for VHEDC .
Banks in the Northeast Metro created special programs that helped businesses fill out applications for Paycheck Protection Program ( PPP ) loans . The City of Vadnais Heights and Ramsey County extended due dates for taxes , delayed some fees and fines , and also instructed businesses to turn off their water while closed .
“ Vadnais Heights ’ City Administrator Kevin Watson put together a plan to allow more temporary signage for businesses closer to the street . The city also issued an ordinance addendum that allowed restaurants to provide outdoor seating for customers ,” said Moscatelli .
