Every WorldSBK team surely has one special place they can call home ? Their headquarters , or HQ for short ? In many cases , that ’ s not strictly true . With multiple entities often involved in creating the final top WorldSBK efforts , defining where their once traditional HQ is located is not always a task that can be performed . It ’ s complicated …

As we are about to realise , exactly what constitutes each team ’ s ‘ HQ ’ in WorldSBK racing is not a one-size-fits-all model . In the official set-up from BMW , for example , there are two main parts that form the overall force that takes to the track on race weekends and tests - and they are based in two different countries .
The SMR side of things , run by former UK racer and successful businessman Shaun Muir , is based in the north East of England . So their own specific HQ is there . But that ’ s not even half the whole story . There is also BMW Motorrad ’ s Motorsport ’ s HQ in Munich , Germany , where racing operations are controlled by Dutchman Marc Bongers and his directly employed BMW staff , work on strategy and machine development . Just to add another two levels of complication , the race engines are built inside the main BMW Berlin production site - in the same overall complex as the road bikes we can all buy - but race chassis are prepared in yet another facility , not far from Munich . There is another twist in where HQ could be even just for the SMR squad , but more of that later .
In reality , the true BMW Motorrad HQ is in Munich , where the big bosses work and live .
Muir explained it all in layman ’ s ’ terms . “ Our team HQ is in the UK , in Guisborough , North Yorkshire .” Now here ’ s that twist in the tale . “ There is also a satellite one in Portugal , at the Portimao circuit , for the mid-season work . All our ‘ winter work ’ - pre-season work - gets done at Guisborough . But once the season starts we only go back there once , for the Donington Park WorldSBK round . After that , all of the work gets done at our central base in Portugal . We set that up just so we could have an EU base after Brexit . So that ’ s my SMR side of things . On the BMW side the HQ is where the BMW Motorrad Headquarters are in Munich . Engine ( race engine ) production is done in Berlin , but the final development work gets done in Munich , because they have a workshop set-up there as well .”

Jak brzy zjistíme , každý tým WorldSBK vnímá pojem „ HQ “ jinak . Například v oficiálním týmu BMW figurují dva hlavní subjekty , jež se účastní závodních víkendů a testů – a sídlí ve dvou různých zemích .
Část SMR , kterou vede bývalý britský závodník a úspěšný podnikatel Shaun Muir , má sídlo na severovýchodě Anglie . Ale to není ani polovina celého příběhu . Dále tu máme sídlo BMW Motorrad Motorsport v německém Mnichově , kde závodní činnosti řídí Nizozemec Marc Bongers se svým týmem spadajícím přímo pod BMW . Tito lidé pracují na strategii a vývoji strojů . Aby to nebylo tak jednoduché , musíme přidat ještě dva faktory . Jedním je ten , že BMW své závodní motory staví v hlavním výrobním závodě BMW Motorrad v Berlíně , kde se vyrábějí také sériové motocykly . A druhým jsou závodní šasi připravované v dalším zařízení nedaleko Mnichova . A je tu ještě jeden zvrat , pokud bychom se chtěli bavit o tom , kde má ústředí pouze tým SMR . Ale o tom až později .
Ve skutečnosti se hlavní centrála BMW Motorrad nachází v Mnichově , kde pracují a žijí velcí šéfové .
Muir vše objasnil zcela polopaticky : „ Centrála našeho týmu je ve Velké Británii , v Guisborough v Severním Yorkshiru .“ A teď přichází onen zvrat , o němž už padla zmínka . „ Máme také pobočku v Portugalsku , na okruhu Portimão , pro práci uprostřed sezóny . Veškeré naše , zimní aktivity , tedy práce před sezónou , probíhají v Guisborough . Po zahájení sezóny se tam ale vracíme jen jednou , a to na závod WorldSBK v Donington Parku . Poté veškerá naše práce probíhá v naší portugalské centrále . Tu jsme zřídili jen proto , abychom po brexitu měli základnu v EU .“ Takže takhle celou věc vidí SMR . Pokud jde o BMW , tak centrála je tam , kde je hlavní sídlo BMW Motorrad , tedy v Mnichově . Motory ( závodní ) se vyrábějí v Berlíně , ale finální vývojové práce probíhají v Mnichově , protože tam mají také dílenské zázemí .“
