A s many of us are back to entertaining , kitchens are once again the hub of the house . The likes of homemade tiles , decorative handles and artisanal touches throughout – from pottery to wooden utensils and hand-carved boards – are used as accent pieces that also start conversations . The increase in creative and colorful statement pieces highlights a shift away from the all-white kitchen .
“ I think , ultimately , people are becoming more open to experimenting with color and texture ,” says Morgan Mackintosh , owner and principal designer of Beige & Bleu , “ and allowing their kitchens to tell a story rather than just [ being ] a ... functional space .”
WARM CABINETS Whether painted an earthy hue or showcasing darker natural wood finishes , warmer tone kitchen cabinets are en vogue . Mackintosh says walnut and ebony are especially popular , as pictured here , and also allow the hardware to pop . ( metcabinet . com )

HANDMADE TILES Designers are noticing an increase in Moroccan Zellige tiles as well as tiles in unexpected materials like mirrored , fluted and fresh colors . Fiona McDonald , project manager at DJArchitects in Aspen , says hand-shaped Zellige are often paired with Scandinavian walnut cabinetry to remain timeless . McDonald says clients are increasingly seeking bespoke schemes , “ thus the delightful imperfections of handcrafted tile add to this sense of uniqueness .”
