Mendota Heights A Community of Quality
Mendota Heights is one of the Twin Cities premier suburbs , offering high quality residential and business areas . Per capita incomes and average property values are among the highest in the area , but homes in more moderate price brackets are also available . Much of the housing stock are desirable single-family homes located on large lots , but in recent years many new multi-family units , both rental and owner occupied , have been constructed .
Both I-35E and I-494 traverse the City . Major employment centers such as downtown Minneapolis , downtown Saint Paul , Bloomington , Mall of America , and MSP International Airport are just minutes away . At the same time , the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers form a natural green belt around the community , enabling it to maintain a quiet , private way of life .
Residents place a high emphasis on parks , open space , and recreation areas . Historic Pilot Knob / Oheyawahe is a regional park asset which is located within the city . Excellent public and private schools , including three high schools , and a welleducated populace complement the traditional , but progressive , character of the City .
The City welcomes high quality business development and approximately 25 percent of the land has been reserved for that purpose . According to the 2020 United States Census , Mendota Heights has 11,744 residents , who live in 4,787 households . Most of the land in the community is now fully developed , but there are a few residential and commercial lots which remain . The estimated market value for all property is $ 2.0 billion .
HISTORY and COMMUNITY PROFILE The present-day cities of Mendota and Mendota Heights are located at the junction of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers . Around 1820 , a fur trader named Jean Baptiste Faribault settled in the area and became the first farmer . In 1834 , Henry Sibley of the American Fur Company arrived to run a trading post ; he later became Minnesota ’ s first governor . This trading post and Fort Snelling across the river formed the basis of one of the first settlements in Minnesota .
Originally the area was called St . Peter ( or St . Pierre ) but was later changed to Mendota , an Indian word meaning “ meeting of the waters ”. In 1837 and 1851 , large tracts of land were ceded to the settlers by the Indians . The 1851 Treaty of Mendota was signed on Pilot Knob Hill . When the first request went to the U . S . Senate seeking designation of Minnesota as a Territory , the Capitol was listed as Mendota . After Henry Sibley , the delegate to Congress , explained to Senator Stephen Douglas that the residents did not want the Capitol , it was changed to Saint Paul .
The first road through the region was a military road built by Major Dodd in 1849 . This road is now a part of State Highway 149 and is still called Dodd Road . The Township of Mendota ( established in 1858 ) eventually divided into three separate towns . Mendota was chartered in 1887 and incorporated in 1936 . Lilydale was incorporated in 1901 . The remainder of the township was incorporated as Mendota Heights in 1956 .
