Black History Month – What is it and why do we celebrate it?

What is Black History Month?

October marks Black History Month (BHM) in the UK, a time to learn, appreciate, and understand Black history and culture, amplify Black voices and celebrate the contribution and achievements of Black people, from the past to the present day.

It also carries the embodied knowledge of pain, sacrifice, undaunted spirit, and perseverance that is rooted in the Black experience.

Is there a theme for Black History Month 2022?

Each year Black History Month has a different theme to focus on throughout the month. The theme for this year is - Time for Change: Action Not Words.

This month many people are intentional about uplifting the community by supporting Black businesses, events, books, shows, films, and culture. The hope is that our collective contributions to humanity will be celebrated with the kind of intention that extends far beyond the boundaries of 31 days. Black history is British history.

Why is Black History Month important?

It is crucial to have conversations about race at work as they help organisations with anti-racism efforts and promote a two-way discussion about race between Black, Asian, ethnically diverse, and white employees. In turn building relationships, chemistry, and trust among co-workers.

Black stories have been largely forgotten and have been a neglected part of the national narrative. To focus on celebration, learning and reflection is a meaningful step towards creating more equal, diverse and inclusive communities for Black people.
