REFLECTION #1

So What:

This educational experience has been transformative, shifting my view of HR from a support-centric function to a strategic entity within an organisation. The ability to emphasise business acumen has made me appreciate the importance of aligning HR practices with market trends to enhance organisational performance. As a future HR professional, the need for a strategic approach to talent management – one that incorporates both ethical considerations and a commercial drivehas become a clear objective for my career. As highlighted by Greene et al., (2008) Recognising the value of evidence-based business cases in demonstrating ROI has underscored the commercial essence of the HR function.

Taking proactive steps in key areas like diversity, employer brand, and job design is becoming increasingly vital for human resources groups to transition into more strategic roles supporting long-term success. As HR progresses beyond traditional administrative functions, embracing innovative approaches across areas like inclusion, external reputation, and role flexibility allows them to provide greater value in addressing complex workforce issues central to modern business performance. By spearheading vital initiatives around managing diversity, sculpting a compelling employer image, and incorporating agility into role creation, HR solidifies an adaptive, forward-thinking identity crucial for sitting at the leadership table.

Now What:

As a student poised to enter the HR field, I am motivated to establish a foundation of business acumen that will allow me to contribute effectively to an organisation's strategic objectives. I plan to further my education in this area by seeking internships and practical experiences that will enable me to observe and contribute to the development of talent management strategies. Moreover, I aim to engage with industry professionals to understand how they navigate and respond to changing market trends through HR initiatives.

In preparation for my future role, I will conduct simulated analyses of different HR scenarios, assessing the impact of various talent management approaches on organisational performance. I intend to familiarise myself with the tools necessary for creating robust business cases, which I believe will be crucial for advocating HR strategies that yield measurable benefits.

This reflection is not solely an academic exercise but a declaration of my commitment to applying these theories in my upcoming career. I understand that talent management is an area marked by continuous evolution and learning. By focusing on business acumen and commercial drive, I aspire to become an HR professional who not only champions best practices but also contributes to the strategic triumph of my future workplace.
