Project Performance

In partnership with Block Solutions and Yayasan Classroom of Hope Indonesia, we built three permanent, environmentally sustainable, and earthquake-resistant classrooms. The construction turnaround was very rapid, completed within a total of 28 days. The local building team used their newly learned skills in constructing buildings using the Finnish Block technology – skills that can be passed onto others for future projects.

This project came in under budget by more than 4%. The COHI operations team has gained a better understanding of processing all permits/licenses required to transport the blocks from Finland to Lombok, which contributed to our success in significantly reducing unnecessary costs (i.e. payment of demurrage fees) when receiving the blocks.

Environmental sustainability was a high priority for this project. The blocks used to construct the classroom walls are carbon neutral and produced from 50% recycled materials and 50% bio-composite materials. Other building materials were sourced locally or repaired and reused where possible. The blocks are earthquake-resistant and certified to last 100 years. As Sigar Penjalin Primary School is a registered government school, it will be maintained and run by the staff and community. The government will provide teacher salaries, staff training, and school materials.
