To get around this, the Vestals were provided with provisions to last a few days, so that they were not "buried" but died in a "habitable room".
After they had served their term, they were allowed to get married. Marriage to a former Vestal was a high honor as they were only allowed to marry nobles. However many did not marry as they were among the small number of Roman women who were not required to be under the protection of a man, be it her father or a husband. They were granted privelages other women were not, such as owning and handling their own property.
