Io was a young priestess of the goddess Juno. She was once Jupiter's chosen object of desire. To avoid detection by his wife, Jupiter approached Io in the form of a dark cloud. However Juno knew immediately it was her husband, who had a very long history of being unfaithful. Once Jupiter realized that his wife knew about his current infidelity he turned his lover into a white cow to escape her wrath. He didn't succeed and Io was captured and tied up. Juno sent Argus, a many-eyed monster who was faithful to her, to watch Io and ensure she did not escape.
