What is dating violence?
Studies have shown that dating violence is actually common among young Americans. In fact, 1 out of every 3 young Americans has been victims of dating violence, physically, sexually, emotionally or a combination of all. During an abusive relationship, there are generally controlling behaviors, aggressive behaviors and violence involved. This can happen to people of all ages, race, ethnicity, religious backgrounds, straight, gay or lesbian relationships, and can definitely leave a short or long term negative effects.
What are the signs of dating violence?
When someone is in a romantic relationship is more controlling than the other and attempts to dominate or gain total control of the other person through abuse, it is an early sign ofan abusive relationship.
Controlling behaviors may include:
1. Not being able to hang out with your friends
2. Frequently calling to find out what you’re up to, whom you’re with, where you are
3. Telling you what is allowed for you to do or wear and what isn’t
4. Wanting you all to him/herself all the time
This will often be linked with jealousy, possessiveness, manipulation and other threatening behaviors. Controlling behavior is not the only sign of an abusive relationship. Another one of the early sign is fear for your partner. Knowing that you have to constantly watch what you say or do to avoid a blow-up between each other is a sign you’re your relationship is either unhealthy or abusive.
Other signs for abusive relationships include:
1.Extreme jealousy
2.Explosive anger
3.Isolating you from your loved ones
4.Tendency to abuse you verbally and or mentally on a daily basis
5.Afraid or anxious to please your partner
6.Harassing phone calls from your partner
