Morgan Prettyman is known to her friends and family as a poet and a fiction writer. She archives her poetry on her blog, found at https://brianabatty.wordpress.com. She has a Master’s degree in Biomedical Writing from the University of Sciences in Philadelphia. She agreed to an interview over the phone regarding how she got started as a writer, where she is now, and where she plans to go in the future.
Donn: What got you started writing?
Prettyman: I started writing little stories, probably back in elementary school. I would come up with a story, and my mom would type it up for me because I didn’t know how to type yet.
Donn: Have you ever taken a writing class?
Prettyman: I took a short story class in college that I loved so much. It really pushed me because I don’t really write short. Short is not my style. They said to write a thousand-word story, and I thought, “Wow, that’s hard.”
Donn: It’s not enough room?
Prettyman: Yeah, I wondered what I could tell a story about in only two double-spaced pages. I ended up really liking the story I came up with. I did a historical fiction thing set in World War I, which isn’t a topic I usually pick, but I randomly did. It was interesting. It was very different for me.
Donn: You used to do stories with your brother. Do you still do that?
Prettyman: Yeah, I still write stories with Duncan.
Donn: Do you write those down or do you just talk about them?
Prettyman: They get written down in the form of notes. We work out the story and then I write them up in a bullet list form. We are working on a multi-part coauthored book. That’s a current project.
